Masters swimming: Nico greeted with collective swoon

You may recall an article in the October 2017 Enterprise about the wedding of Cristina Martinez-Canton and Ignacio Castano-Aguado in the civic swimming pool — yes, in, not at.

365体育滚球The couple were joined in marriage in front of friends and teammates by Davis Aquatics Masters head coach Stu Kahn. Until then, we never suspected that swimming coaches could marry people.

Cristina is head coach of the Davis AquaStarz synchronized swim team. Ignacio is a video-game programmer.

365体育滚球Throughout most of 2019 we watched Cristina grow rounder and happier. We asked anxiously for weeks if the baby had come. It was late. Finally, in early February we asked one last time if the baby had come. He had. Nicolas Martin Castano-Canton, 8-pounds, 5-ounces, was cuddled against his father’s chest. A collective “oooo” and “aaah” rose above the pool.

365体育滚球Nico has been visiting the pool regularly.

Water Polo Tournament: Davis Masters Water Polo will field teams in the UC Davis men’s water polo club tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, at Schaal Aquatics Center.

College club and masters teams from around the state will play. The outcome depends to a great extent on whether I am allowed to wear fins. One of the reasons I love this tournament is that the UC San Diego club team once gave me a special cheer.

Kahn wisdom: Coach Kahn has been handing out swimming tips along with Chinese wisdom lately.

I asked him why I could not seem to finish my strokes when swimming fast. He explained how I was not pushing hard enough against the water at the end of a stroke. This helped.

Stu’s reply was ancient: “When the student asks the right question, the teacher will come.”

Santa Rosa results: DAM was well represented by the usual suspects at the Santa Rosa Masters Resolution meet on Jan. 11 at Santa Rosa Junior College.

365体育滚球All of us swam in multiple events, including: Laurel Krovetz, Melanie Belluomini, Stephanie Denison, Emma Garforth, Jane Russell, Matt Roper, Ted Krovetz, Doug Smith, and your reporter. I do appreciate those courtesy cheers I get for finishing a distant last. I have developed a royal wave for my supporters, but I don’t throw kisses.

Brut for Brutes:365体育滚球 The Yancher family hosted a swell celebration of the 11th Ross Yancher Brute Squad swim Jan. 26 at the Super Owl Brewery in the Westlake Shopping Center.

365体育滚球All who finished the regular Brute Squad or the new Brute Squad lite were recognized. Some of us got Brut cologne as a prize. Brute Squad hoodies were handed out: the Stu Kahn design featured a Brute Squad whale swallowing a Brute Squad Lite shark. All who finished got certificates with their Brute times produced by Sharon Blaha.

One Hour Swim and Food Bank:365体育滚球 The nationwide one-hour swim ends at the end of February. Lanes will be set aside for some practices during the week and on weekends. DAM will supply watches, clipboards and split sheets. Swimmers must provide someone to do their counting. It is $7 to enter.

365体育滚球Again this year, DAM hosts a food drive for the Yolo County Food Bank. Tons of food and thousands of dollars have been donated by DAM members over the years. Canned food is accepted but cash is preferred. The Food Bank can get more for the money.

Aging with Pac Masters: I don’t know of any sport that tries harder than masters swimming to encourage people to compete as they grow older.

365体育滚球Pacific Masters has developed a complicated formula for ranking swimmers according to age, gender, participation in competition and results.

365体育滚球DAM swimmers in the top 10 of their age and gender groups last year include: Laurel Krovetz, Vivian A. Crow, Jennifer L. Mohn, Sarah M. Hernandez, Melanie C. Belluomini, Stephanie Denison, Emma Garforth, Jane E. Russell, Jennifer R. Phalen, Kimberly D. Elsbach, Assistant Coach Mary Kahn, Rosawita Norris, Susan Munn, Marc Blumberg, Satori Iwamoto, Matt Roper (first place), Brian C. Bolz (first place), Kevin Waterson, Ted Krovetz, head coach Stuart Kahn, Robert F. Norris and your reporter.
