UC Davis roundup: Leon’s 3rd dinger paces Aggies

365体育滚球With Isabella Leon, Maddie Rojas, Riley Siegel and Leah Polson all hitting home runs, the UC Davis softball team banged out 15 hits in a five-inning 11-3 knockout of Santa Clara in the third day of the NorCal Kickoff conducted at La Rue Stadium. Senior Katie Kibby went the distance in the pitching circle.

The Aggies improved to 3-1 and meet Idaho State at 11:30 a.m. today, the tournament’s final day.

365体育滚球For Leon it was her third round-tripper of the young season while freshman Poulson cracked her first Aggie homer.

Kibby scattered seven hits and walked two on just 78 pitches in her five innings of work.

It was a homecoming for new Bronco head coach Gina Carbonatto. She previously served as an Aggie assistant for three years.

Sun Devils pushed

365体育滚球Mar Alvear won nine of the Aggies’ 20 draw controls — and finished as one of four Aggies to net two goals — but visiting Arizona State had a hot hand and topped its hosts, 16-12, in the women’s lacrosse opener at UC Davis Health Stadium.

Alvear and seniors Maddie Myers, Sorana Larson and Kate Graham each had two goals for the locals.

Davis stays home, next meeting California on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Water polo split

SAN DIEGO — The UC Davis women’s water polo squad lost to No. 19 Indiana, 12-11, in sudden-death overtime and then defeated Pomona-Pitzer to close the first day at the Triton Invitational.

Against the Hoosiers, Chloe Robinson made the double hat trick with six total goals and Noelle Wijnbelt had a hat trick.

The Aggies jumped out to an early lead in the 14-8 win over Division III powerhouse Pomona-Pitzer. Goals came from six different players: Wijnbelt, Devin Holcomb, McKenna Martin, Cassidy Smithson, former Davis High standout Alyssa Lengtat and Julia Hartmann also contributing.

Holcomb and Smithson had hat tricks.

UC Davis continues its bid for ninth place with a noon game against No. 22 CSUN. The Aggies will advance to play LMU or the winner of Marist and San Diego State no earlier than 4 p.m. in the Canyon View Pool.

Aggies in 14th

365体育滚球WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — The UC Davis men’s golf team finished 14th at the 29th annual Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings Golf Course on Saturday.

The Aggies finished with a final round 291 to end the three-day event at 2-over as a team, placing ahead of No. 25 Stanford (4-over) and No. 26 Oregon State (14-over) — as well as besting Big West Conference rivals CSUN (9-over) and Hawaii (21 over).

365体育滚球Top-ranked Pepperdine stormed back to win the team title at 39 under, just two strokes up on Texas.

365体育滚球The Waves’ William Mouw won a playoff with Arizona State’s Mason Andersen tied for medalist honors.

365体育滚球Freshman Lucas Carper was the Aggies’ biggest mover on the day, firing a 3-under 69. Thomas Hutchison shot a 75 to finish the event at 4-under in a tie for 32nd.
